Human
Dignity and the Failure of Communism
November 5, 2004
Dr. Stephane Courtois

Professor Stéphane Courtois
is the author of numerous books
and was the co-author of The
Black Book of Communism, which
has sold more than one million
copies worldwide. Dr. Courtois
has also worked as a Director
of Research at the French National
Center for Scientific Research
(CNRS) and as Director of the
Group for the Study and Observation
of Democracy at the University
of Paris.
Dr. Courtois added his own
personal history conversion
from a youthful support of Maoism
to his sweeping but precise
presentation of the evils wrought
by communism. His message was
not depressing but inspiring:
he called his audience to see
that totalitarianism was still
a danger to democracy and that
the battle now depended upon
the next generation.
This
seminar will help me to give
my students a lot of new information
and to present to them the opinions
of people from other CEE countries.
